The Great Barrier Reef

Shade sails to be used to protect the Great Barrier Reef

A paper recently published in Nature Climate Change speaks of a plan devised by scientists in Australia to protect the Great Barrier Reef from damage by installing shade sails on the surface of the ocean above the fragile coral reef. The proposal would mean covering the reefs with cloth thus shading them from sunlight which would reduce the bleaching that is damaging them so intensively. The massive sheets of cloth would be anchored with ropes attached to pontoons and made to float on the surface of the water in a bid to shield the reef from the strong rays of sunlight.

Australian marine biologist Russell Hore said that while the idea had seemed laughable, everything had to be considered to protect the World Heritage-listed reef. “Although it would be impossible to shade all 348,000 square kilometers of the entire reef, an area of small shade cloths will prove that coral bleaching can be tackled by reducing light and temperature”, he said. Are you prepared for the summer heat wave?

As I write this it is mid-June in Spain on the Costa Blanca, and the high temperatures predicted for today are supposed to reach up to 37 degrees centigrade. The beaches are busy, the sea is warm and the bars & restaurants are picking up and readying themselves for the full onslaught of tourists coming in the next few weeks.

All this heat reminded me of an article that I recently read online. Being an expert in the industry of shading people and possessions I always like to keep abreast of changes in the industry and I am interested in stories related to the sun, heat, and of course, shade.

The United States Government have made a series of preparatory recommendations for US citizens as the heat of the summer approaches. The main points they are asking their people to consider are: Water, Rest and Shade. More…

As we begin to head into summer, regular warnings of using adequate sun protection start to appear in the local newspapers. But what else do we need to think about when we consider sun protection? More…

Shade sails over restaurant

Coolashade shade sails for bars and cafés

One of life’s simplest, but greatest, pleasures is to sit in a bar or café enjoying a refreshing drink whilst relaxing on holiday. Countless bar owners know this fact and they spend lots of time and money making this experience as enjoyable and as pleasurable as possible for us. Stroll along a promenade in any resort in Spain and you will see busy cafés and bars filled with many holiday makers and regulars, the happy faces of their patrons supping on their ice cold beers and chilled wines, or enjoying a cafe con leche. What you might also see are uncomfortable children and adults squirming to squeeze under the parasol because the sun is burning their heads or shining brightly in their eyes. More…
