As I write this it is early July and the temperature here on the Costa Blanca area of Spain is teetering around the 32°c mark on the thermometer outside. How can I help protect myself and my family from the sun’s harmful UV rays?

The most important way to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer is to avoid unprotected exposure to the sun and its harmful UV rays. The easiest way to avoid excessive exposure to ultraviolet light is to keep away from sun, wear protection or stay in the shade whenever possible. Wearing long-sleeved clothing of light-weight material, using sunscreen or avoiding sun exposure during the hours between 10:00 and 16:00 in summer are ways to avoid these risks, but wearing long-sleeved clothing may produce more body heat. Sunscreens can be sticky and must be reapplied frequently to be effective and staying indoors throughout the day is not the preferred option when you have a beautiful garden and pool that are waiting for you to use it!
